Halifax & Peggy’s Cove – Nova Scotia

Will we go to Halifax? Will we not go to Halifax? That was the question on our trip to the Canadian Atlantic Provinces. Out-of-control wildfires near Halifax forced the evacuation of 16,000 people in the weeks before our trip.

Fortunately, cooler weather and rain quelched the fires by the time we arrived in Canada. However, we had already rearranged our itinerary twice (and almost canceled the entire trip). If we drove the Cabot Trail in one day, we could spend a good portion of a day in Halifax and Peggy’s Cove. We were so close it would be ridiculous not to visit. After all, Halifax isn’t on the beaten path as many US carriers no longer fly to the airport.

Cape Breton Island – Nova Scotia

While not on our original itinerary, we managed to spend two nights on Cape Breton Island. A week before our vacation, out-of-control wildfires burned near Halifax. As residents evacuated into hotels, we canceled the Halifax portion of the trip and set our sights on Cape Breton Island.

Separated from Nova Scotia by the Strait of Canso, the peninsula boasts the 185-mile Cabot Trail with awe-inspiring coastline views of the Atlantic Ocean. Plus, the Cape Breton Highlands National Park offers hiking trails and waterfalls!

24 Hours in Prince Edward Island, Canada

Back in high school, my parents and I spent ten days exploring Quebec and New Brunswick. We ended up staying one night in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI). I knew then I wanted come here again. A similar decision occurred when traveling to Portschache, Austria, which I revisited a few years back.

Tears came to my eyes when I stepped onto the island at the Borden-Carleton Visitor Center. I was here and I was headed to Cavendish, the land of Anne of Green Gables!
