Marineland, Florida

Spring is always a fun time to visit St. Augustine. We loved going down there every year for the tail end of our daughter’s spring break at Flagler College. Even though she usually came home for the week, we found excuses to make the trip down there since she had a few days off from school to be a tourist. Last spring, we decided to go to Marineland.

Marineland isn’t a place you hear about much now. But in its heyday from the 1940s to 1970s, Marineland drew in crowds of up to 500,000 per year. When my parents took me to Disney World when I was four, we made a stop at Marineland. I don’t remember that part of the trip, so I wanted to make a return visit.

Flagler College – St. Augustine, FL

It’s a busy season around here. Within the past year, we’ve had two college graduations and one wedding! Today’s post highlights Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, where Thing 1 graduated.

Everyone asks, “How did your daughter pick Flagler?” Well, it’s easy. Flagler was one of the few colleges open for college tours in August 2020 during the pandemic. I knew someone who attended there in the late 1980s and had seen the campus in the early 1990s. I remember Flagler being a small, liberal arts college in a pretty cool town. Despite not being able to enter many of the campus buildings during the tour, Flagler College felt like the right choice for my daughter. And we fell in love with St. Augustine.

Father Miguel O’Reilly House, Trinity Parish Church, and Memorial Presbyterian – St. Augustine, FL

On our latest visit to St. Augustine, we stumbled upon the St. Augustine History Festival. During the 5-day event, the University of Florida Historic St. Augustine (UFHSA) presented special events at over 30 historic sites, churches, gardens, and cemeteries. Most events were free and didn’t require tickets or reservations.

I looked at the schedule and decided to see three sites – the Father Miguel O’Reilly House, Trinity Parish Church, and Memorial Presbyterian Church. It only took about two hours since the sites are located close to each other, and the tours occurred around the same time.
