St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum – St. Augustine, FL

In the winter of 2025, we visited Thing 1 at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. We decided to visit the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum located in the historic district. I’ve never been particularly interested in pirates and couldn’t tell you who Blackbeard was, but I learned a lot and found the museum to be worthwhile.

Pat Croce, pirate scholar, diver, and former president of the Philadelphia 76ers, began this museum in 2005. Located in Key West, the collection included many of Croce’s artifacts from his dives. The museum moved to St. Augustine in 2010 and boasts over 800 heirlooms, exhibits created by Disney imagineers, and multiple “Book of Pirates” interactive touch-screen displays.

Marineland, Florida

Spring is always a fun time to visit St. Augustine. We loved going down there every year for the tail end of our daughter’s spring break at Flagler College. Even though she usually came home for the week, we found excuses to make the trip down there since she had a few days off from school to be a tourist. Last spring, we decided to go to Marineland.

Marineland isn’t a place you hear about much now. But in its heyday from the 1940s to 1970s, Marineland drew in crowds of up to 500,000 per year. When my parents took me to Disney World when I was four, we made a stop at Marineland. I don’t remember that part of the trip, so I wanted to make a return visit.

Everyone asks, “How did your daughter pick Flagler?” Well, it’s easy. Flagler was one of the few colleges open for college tours in August 2020 during the pandemic. I knew someone who attended there in the late 1980s and had seen the campus in the early 1990s. I remember Flagler being a small, liberal arts college in a pretty cool town. Despite not being able to enter many of the campus buildings during the tour, Flagler College felt like the right choice for my daughter. And we fell in love with St. Augustine.
