Fairfield Manor – Shreveport

You may remember my post on Fairfield Place B&B in Shreveport a few years ago. Recently we stayed again at the sister property, Fairfield Manor, across the street.

As usual, we planned this trip on the fly. Literally, we flew in on a Saturday and flew out the next day – a full 25 hours in my hometown of Shreveport. One way to make Shreveport more of a vacation is to stay at a B&B if we’re not traveling with Thing 1 and Thing 2.

Fairfield Place/Fairfield Manor fits the bill. Nestled in the Historic Highland neighborhood, the properties are not far from downtown Shreveport. You can read about my previous stay at Fairfield Place here.

Fairfield Manor

Located just across the street from the 1870-built Fairfield Place, many may drive by Fairfield Manor simply because it’s not as eye-catching. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful. The white stucco house with dormer windows was probably built in the 1920s (this is purely a guess), and offers over 4,000 square feet of space.

Although many guests enter from the parking lot in the back, I’ll start describing the property from the front door. When stepping inside the large foyer, you’ll immediately gaze at the large dining area perfect for an elegant formal dinner on your left. On the opposite sides of both the dining room and the foyer, smaller rooms boast large round tables. I can totally see this spot for a wedding rehearsal dinner.

You’ll soon notice the house is made for hosting lots of events when walking around. On the north side of the house, a deck with an outdoor bar and lots of tables provides a great outdoor venue spot. Heading to the sitting room, you’ll pass a butler’s pantry featuring lots of serving pieces and the door to the prep kitchen.

I love the unexpected decor inside Fairfield Manor. The main downstairs sitting room (where B&B guests enter from the parking lot) features bright green jungle-print wallpaper and a leopard-print couch – something different than I anticipated. Just like Fairfield Place, guests find a smorgasbord of complimentary snacks, coffee, and tea choices.

We stayed in the Loyola Suite, just off the hall downstairs. Again, I loved the unexpected bright colors of the comforter on the antique four-poster bed. We had a full burgundy-colored bathroom with a tub, plenty of towels, shampoo, and soap.

Upstairs Area

The house offered five bedrooms – two downstairs and three upstairs. As usual, amazing paintings and art occupy all the walls. Heading up the large staircase, I enjoyed the framed articles about famous Shreveport homes and gardens from the 1930s and 1940s.

At the top of the stairs past the bedrooms, a small cozy sitting area greeted us. Armed with more snacks, tea, coffee, and other beverages, I could have sat up here with a good book for a few hours.

Outdoor Garden Area

Surrounded by lots of trees, shrubbery, and a wrought-iron fence, the front yard feels peaceful with lots of nooks and crannies for reading a book. You certainly wouldn’t know you were on a busy street. At night, overhead string lights and a lit gazebo add to the ambiance. Wedding couples often use this area for the ceremony.

Both side yards offer lots of seating areas for outdoor events and parties. In the backyard, you’ll find a large saltwater lap pool, an amenity for guests at both properties.

Breakfast

I still love the sister Victorian property across the street and hoped I’d be able to spend some time there. We walked over for breakfast the next morning promptly at 8:30. For guests who don’t want to walk over, the staff will bring a breakfast tray to Fairfield Manor.

Breakfast in the main house was delicious and filling as before. We had eggs, sausage, grits, fruit, and jalapeno corn muffins. I noticed the owner (who I didn’t get to see on this trip) had rearranged the sitting room. Still stylish as before, the new arrangement offers natural light to fill the room.

Full from breakfast, we sat on the front porch for a few minutes before checking out. We still had another two family functions before our flight out that afternoon.

More Information

So which property, Fairfield Manor or Fairfield Place, do I prefer? Both of them! Originally, I thought staying at Fairfield Manor might feel similar to sitting at the kid’s table on holidays. That wasn’t the case at all. You can’t go wrong at either property.
