Fairfield Manor – Shreveport
You may remember my post on Fairfield Place B&B in Shreveport a few years ago. Recently we stayed again at the sister property, Fairfield Manor, across the street.
As usual, we planned this trip on the fly. Literally, we flew in on a Saturday and flew out the next day – a full 25 hours in my hometown of Shreveport. One way to make Shreveport more of a vacation is to stay at a B&B if we’re not traveling with Thing 1 and Thing 2.
Fairfield Place/Fairfield Manor fits the bill. Nestled in the Historic Highland neighborhood, the properties are not far from downtown Shreveport. You can read about my previous stay at Fairfield Place here.

Fairfield Place Bed & Breakfast
Fairfield Place B&B – Shreveport, LA
We had a delightful experience staying at Fairfield Place Bed & Breakfast a few weeks ago in my hometown of Shreveport, LA.
First I have to tell you about Shreveport lodging – or lack thereof. The first night I spent in a Shreveport hotel was after I got married. Located downtown, we stayed at a hotel surrounded by 7 off-ramps from I-20 outside our window. At the time, that was one of Shreveport’s premier downtown hotels.
Most newer hotels sit near the Shreveport airport or along the interstate in Bossier City. Neither locations are convenient to my old stomping grounds. In recent years, a couple of hotels have cropped up near LSU-S, but they have gotten expensive due to proximity to the campus and one of the larger hospitals.
On this last trip, I decided to try one of the bed & breakfast places in the Fairfield Historic District. I’d always heard about Fairfield Place since it was one of the first historic houses that converted to a B&B in the early 1980s. Also, Chef John Carriere of Monjuni’s fame bought the place around 10 years ago.

Creole Nature Trail – Part 2
One of the most scenic drives in Louisiana is the Creole Nature Trail in the southwestern edge of the state. We did the western half of it in 2013, but decided to do the eastern portion of it a few weeks ago. It was Christmas Day so many of the stops were not open.
Abbeville, LA
As we left Lafayette, we headed south on Highway 167 to Abbeville, La – a small town in Vermillion parish. The main claim to fame is the Palmetto Island State Park, but we didn’t have time to visit. The highway led us through the town square and around the Vermillion Parish courthouse. It’s my favorite style of archictecture, much like the style of famed architect A. Hays Town. It was no suprise when I later learned that Mr. Town built the Greek-Revival building in 1953.
